A year of growth

Flegg now operates a fleet of over 20 commercial vehicles and vans. As a business, we are legally obliged to ensure that all LGV’s and trailers are regularly inspected and a daily defect reporting system is in place and managed.
Our workshop Foreman/Manager Richard Wingrove (Winnie) is responsible for keeping the Flegg vehicles maintained and safe for the road. Winnie is very much part of the Flegg business having been with us since 1992. He brings a range of skills to the business and has fabricated many bespoke lifting/handling equipment for our clients as well as building bodies for the lorries.
Inevitably the growth of the business has involved a growth in the Fleet. Just 3 years ago, the fleet consisted of only 12 vehicles. So, James Blackman joined the team as Workshop trainee in August 2015 and is ear-marked to fill Winnie’s boots when his working days end.
Having the workshop on site gives our transport desk a lot of flexibility to ensure that our vehicle utilisation is maintained.

Here at Flegg we were delighted to have been awarded the contract to work with Wavin.
Wavin UK is a member of the Wavin Group – the world leader in plastic pipe systems for residential, non-residential and civil engineering projects.
Based at several locations across the UK, they had a business need to relocate their production units between sites.
Flegg have been providing support by means of supplying a turn-key service to include on site mechanical/electrical decommission and installation, lifting and handling along with transport between the sites.
We were initially asked to tender for the entire job along with two other contractors. We were awarded some on-site works at Chippenham, which was a smaller part of the entire project.
Flegg have now successfully completed several projects including the first two phases of the works in Chippenham.
The works in Chippenham involved our crews and equipment being on site for 20 consecutive days. We provided a full suite of health and safety documents to include risk assessment, method statements, training and equipment inspection records.
Works for 2016 have been completed and we now look forward to undertaking more work after Christmas. Well done to all the crew at Flegg for turning this around.
We also received the following comments from Wavin; Simon Balk (Project Engineer).
“Your project manager and the guys have done a great job in the last four weeks and we really appreciate all the work including extras they have done.
We even got nice feedback from the hotel where our crew stayed;
“I’d like to take the opportunity to mention that the guys you’ve had staying with us have been a credit to your company. All too often those staying with us as part of a long-term job contract are less than polite but I can honestly say each of your guys has been a pleasure to have with us.”
Flegg Projects has shown its love of the beautiful game by sponsoring a local youth football team.
The company’s logo is emblazoned on the kit of the Harefield United under-10’s team.
Mark Marshall, Commercial Director at Flegg said “Youth football clubs like Harefield United are so important in helping youngsters get fit, make friends and learn about team-work. We were delighted to help them this season with a new kit.”
Michelle Petch from Harefield United commented “We would like to thank you for your generosity in sponsoring our team kit this season. Your sponsorship allowed us to provide a new strip for both the Saturday and Sunday Under 10 teams. The Manager and the teams send their appreciation.”
They do say that behind every great man is a great woman and this is no truer than at Flegg Projects. Here are our great team of ladies. And we never forget that the business was formed by a great woman.
Kiersty’s mother Lyn had the vision and dream to build a transportation business and started trading in 1975. We are delighted that Kiersty has recently joined the board of directors as Financial Director. She oversees all financial aspects of the business as well as control of the staff payroll and Human Resources. She is an important member of the team and instrumental to the companies ambitious growth and development.
Su joined the company in 2013. Her role as office manager involves a wide range of responsibilities that are all integral to the day to day running of the business. During her time with us Su has managed to oversee a successful bid to gain ISO 9001 status and continues to manage our quality manuals. Su provides administrative support to the operational team as well as PA duties for our managing director. She definitely has the skills to turn on a sixpence and still keep smiling.
Kate joined the business in 2014. She brings years of experience in sales and service with her and has already become a popular and respected member of the team. Her friendly approach and can-do attitude make her a perfect example of what the Flegg business is all about. She works alongside our Commercial Director and is involved in the day to day managing of several key accounts. We love her cheerfulness in the office – it’s never a dull day with Kate around.
Nicky is our most recent addition having just joined us in October. Nicky will be working alongside Kiersty, providing administrative support for accounts. Nicky comes to us with previous accounting background. Everyone at Flegg welcomes her to the company and we are sure she will become part of the team quickly.
Well, we are nearly at the end of the year again – how did that happen? It has certainly been a busy year. Here are some of our highlights: –
* Opening of our Northern Depot in Washington. This has proved an enormous success and we are very proud of the team in the North.
* Revenues increased by 30% and we don’t give up there. 2017 is another year of planned growth.
* Addition of the following resources:
We believe that every person should have the chance to succeed in any given field. Not all things are equal and sometimes people aren’t given that one chance. As a business, we work hard to unlock potential for individuals wanting to be part of a hardworking, dedicated team. Here at Flegg Projects we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional customer service and we are rewarded with year on year growth. So, if you are prepared for hard work, have the right attitude and a willingness to learn and grow – we can provide the environment.
And don’t take our word for it… one member of our team joined us at 17 with little experience and is now just ten years later our exceptional Transport Manager. Another team member changed careers from a landscape gardener and is now one of our Project Managers having moved up though the business over the last 3 years. We certainly can see individual strengths and allow them to grow in our business.
As a company that is constantly growing and evolving, we are always open to looking for new people to join the team.
We are currently looking for Class 1 drivers but also interested in anyone who feels they would love the work that we do and can contribute to our success.

Back in 2013 Flegg replaced a number of counterbalance forklifts with a range of new Hysters ranging from 2.5 to 7.0-ton capacity. Now 3 years on from taking delivery we spoke to Jayson Flegg (MD) about their performance to date;
“Our forklift fleet was showing its age so we decided to look at options for replacement”. “We already had a relationship with Briggs Equipment as we purchased parts from them and occasionally used them for spot-hire”. “Briggs is the UK distributor for Hyster so it made sense to talk to them about options”. “We quickly worked out that it would be much more cost effective to have new forklifts instead of patching up existing Fleet”. “We signed a long-term agreement with Briggs for four brand new counterbalance trucks, all of which had been specifically designed for our requirements (compact cab and masts)”. “The trucks have been pretty much faultless and when we have had a problem; Briggs support has been impressive”.
Since signing the original deal in 2013 we have added 2 additional Hysters to our growing fleet and are expecting two more S7’s to arrive in October. Mark Marshall (Commercial Director) added; “Signing the deal with Briggs coincided with a period of growth for the business”. “The trucks are well presented and very reliable and this gives our clients the confidence and service they expect”.

The Flegg warehouse at Aston Clinton is a particularly busy environment and we thought it would be interesting to spend a day with our warehouse supervisor and to show what an average day looks like.
Kevin Rymer is currently “celebrating” his 10th anniversary with the business. He joined the crew as a HGV class 1 driver and established himself as a key member of the staff and a competent machine mover. This was recognised when he moved onto the company’s Flagship vehicle, our 4-axle crane trailer.
An opportunity became available within the warehouse and after many years on the road Kevin applied for the warehouse supervisor’s role. We spoke to Kevin about his time in the new role and the challenges it presents.
“The main part of my job is to ensure that machines are out and ready to load when vehicles arrive back to the yard”. “This may sound simple but we are regularly moving machines in/out of the warehouse which are in excess of 15-tons and we are not always blessed with loads of aisle space so it all needs to be carefully co-ordinated and completed safely”.
As well as storage and handling, Flegg also offers clients the ability to build and test their machines.
“We have a large bed-mill in the warehouse at the moment”. As well as providing the storage space the client is using Flegg’s on site lifting resources to help assemble this machine and return it to operational condition. “We are working alongside the customer’s own engineers to carry out the assembly, on this particular machine we helped to lift the bridge section onto the legs with our hydraulic jacking system”.
“The day we lifted the bridge section was particularly busy, as well as setting up the gantry for that lift we also offloaded a printing machine from three shipping containers, a routing machine from two Italian vehicles and assisted our packing contractor with a lift on a 12-ton scanning machine”. “This was on top of the usual loading/offloading of our own fleet”.
“The nature of the business means that things can change at short notice and we need to be able to react”. “I spend a lot of time liaising with our Transport Manager to ensure that we pre-plan movements for each day and to ensure we reduce the chances of double-handling”.
Kevin also has responsibility for the monitoring of our lifting tackle and ensuring that all equipment is available and in good working order. Kevin is a key member of the Flegg team and the directors congratulate him on the success he has made of this new role.
